Michael Kayes

Michael J. Kayes, member-at-large, retired from full time planning positions after 36 years of service in New York State. Mike served as Director of Development, Planning and Tourism in Cattaraugus County and as Director of Planning and Development in Montgomery County. Mike also taught planning coursework at the University of Pittsburgh and Jamestown Community College.

Mike is currently serving as Chairman of the Board of Fulmont Community Action Agency and as the Planning Official Development Officer for the New York Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association. Mike also currently serves on the Boards of the New York State Planning Federation and the Mohawk Valley Economic Development District. Mike is a past president of the National Association of County Planners. He has also served as President of the Upstate New York Chapter of the American Planning Association, The New York State Association of County Planning Directors, Mohawk Valley Economic Development District and the Rural Revitalization Corporation. Additionally Mike has served as Post Commander of New York Post #39 American Legion Post.

In October 2003 Mike received the Upstate New York Chapter of the American Planning Association Award for Professional Planners Distinguished Leadership and in September of 2002 was awarded the New York Planning Federation Heissenbuttal Award for outstanding accomplishments in the planning field. These are the Highest Awards a professional Planner can receive in Upstate New York. Mike holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Mississippi, a Bachelors Degree in Geography from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Economic Development accreditation from the Economic Development Institute of the University of Oklahoma.
